Boren Fellowships

Boren Fellowships provide up to $25,000 to graduate students to add an important international language component to their education through specialization in area study, language study or increased language proficiency. Boren Fellowships support study and research in areas of the world that are critical to U.S. interests, including Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America and the Middle East. Boren Fellows represent a variety of academic and professional disciplines, but all are interested in studying less commonly taught languages.

Berlin Graduate Exchange Student Program

The Laney Graduate School maintains a graduate student exchange program with the Freie Universität Berlin (FUB). The program seeks to promote strong academic and cultural ties between the two institutions. One student may be selected to represent Emory at the FUB for the 2024-25 academic year (October 1, 2024 - July 31, 2025). Selection is based on a competitive process. Please check back for any future updates to this page.

Berlin Program for Advanced German and European Studies Fellowship

The  Berlin  Program offers up to one year of dissertation or postdoctoral research support at the   Freie Universität  Berlin , one of Germany’s leading research universities. It is open to scholars in all social science and humanities disciplines, including historians working on German and European history   since the mid-18th century. The program accepts applications from nationals, permanent and long-term residents from the U.S. and Canada. Applicants for a dissertation fellowship must be full-time graduate students enrolled at a North American university who have achieved ABD status by the time the proposed research stay in Berlin begins. Also eligible are U.S. and Canadian Ph.D.s who have received their doctorates within the past two calendar years from a North American university.

Charlotte W. Newcombe Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship

The Charlotte W. Newcombe Doctoral Dissertation Fellowships are designed to encourage original and significant study of ethical or religious values in all fields of the humanities and social sciences, and particularly to help Ph.D. candidates in these fields complete their dissertation work in a timely manner. In addition to topics in religious studies or in ethics (philosophical or religious), dissertations appropriate to the Newcombe Fellowship competition might explore the ethical implications of foreign policy, the values influencing political decisions, the moral codes of other cultures, and religious or ethical issues reflected in history or literature.

Chateaubriand Fellowship Program

This fellowship offered by the Embassy of France in the United States allows PhD students enrolled in American universities to conduct research in France for 4–9 months. The program is divided into two sub-programs: Science, Technology, Engineering, Math and Health and Humanities and Social Sciences.

Data Incubator's Data Science Fellowship

The Data Science Fellowship Program from The Data Incubator is one of the most rigorous, intensive programs available today. Designed to create the data scientists of tomorrow from qualified STEM academics, this full-time, eight-week program provides the skills needed to succeed in the “best job in America.”

DOE Fusion Energy Sciences Postdoctoral Research Program

The purpose of the Fusion Energy Sciences Postdoctoral Research Program is to offer recent doctoral degree recipients the opportunity to conduct research in DOE fusion energy research and development programs. Participants acquire knowledge and experience in areas of fusion energy science, interact with outstanding scientists and engineers, and have access to advanced equipment and facilities. Appointments are made to designated DOE laboratories, universities and contractor fusion energy centers.

Dolores Zohrab Liebmann Fund Fellowship

The Dolores Zohrab Liebmann Fund was established by the Will of Dolores Zohrab Liebmann and is administered by JPMorgan, Trustee.  Mrs. Liebmann was the daughter of a prominent Armenian intellectual, writer and statesman and was married to one of the owners of a successful American business.  She supported students and educational and charitable organizations during her lifetime.  Mrs. Liebmann's primary concern, as expressed in her Will, was to attract and support students with outstanding character and ability who hold promise for achievement and distinction in their chosen fields of study.  The trustees welcome applications from students of all national origins who are United States citizens.

Ford Foundation

Through its Fellowship Programs, the Ford Foundation seeks to increase the diversity of the nation’s college and university faculties by increasing their ethnic and racial diversity, to maximize the educational benefits of diversity, and to increase the number of professors who can and will use diversity as a resource for enriching the education of all students. Predoctoral, Dissertation, and Postdoctoral fellowships will be awarded in a national competition administered by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine on behalf of the Ford Foundation.

Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad (DDRA) Program

This program provides grants to colleges and universities to fund individual doctoral students who conduct research in other countries, in modern foreign languages, and area studies for periods of six to 12 months.

Harold Gulliksen Psychometric Research Fellowship

This program seeks graduate students who have completed their doctoral coursework and are at the dissertation stage of their program, working on a dissertation related to statistics, psychometrics, educational/psychological measurement or quantitative methods. Selected fellows study at their universities and carry out research under the supervision of an academic mentor and in consultation with an ETS researcher or psychometrician.

HHMI Hanna H. Gray Fellows Program

Through the Hanna H. Gray Fellows Program, HHMI will recruit and retain individuals from groups underrepresented in the life sciences. The program will support early career scientists with the potential to become leaders in academic research. Through their successful careers, HHMI Hanna Gray Fellows will inspire future generations of scientists from America’s diverse talent pool. The Institute will select and support up to 15 Fellows in this competition. The competition is open to all eligible applicants, and no nomination is required.

HHMI - Gilliam Fellowships for Advanced Study

The program provides awards to pairs of dissertation advisers and their graduate students based on what HHMI values and considers essential components of the environment, particularly the institution and adviser’s commitment to creating a healthy academic ecosystem and the student’s potential for scientific leadership.

Insight Fellows Program

Insight offers intensive, seven-week fellowships in data science, health data science, artificial intelligence, and data engineering. Based in New York, Boston, Seattle, and Silicon Valley, and with a growing network across the country, the program enables scientists to learn the industry-specific skills needed to work in the growing field of big data at leading companies.

Mellon/ACLS Dissertation Innovation Fellowship

ACLS invites applications for Mellon/ACLS Dissertation Innovation Fellowships, which provide a year of support for doctoral students preparing to embark on innovative dissertation research projects. This program is made possible by a grant from the Mellon Foundation. Mellon/ACLS Dissertation Innovation Fellowships support graduate students in the humanities and social sciences who show promise of leading their fields in important new directions. The fellowships are designed to intervene at the formative stage of dissertation development, before research and writing are advanced. The program seeks to expand the range of research methodologies, formats, and areas of inquiry traditionally considered suitable for the dissertation, with a particular focus on supporting scholars who can build a more diverse, inclusive, and equitable academy.

NSF-GRFP

The NSF GRFP recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students in NSF-supported STEM disciplines who are pursuing research-based master's and doctoral degrees at accredited US institutions. As of 2021, it is a five-year fellowship that includes three years of financial support.

These STEM internship and fellowship programs are key to the recruitment and preparation of the next generation of our nation’s scientific workforce. ETS Postdoctoral Fellowship Program

This program provides opportunities for early career scholars to work with ETS researchers on a variety of cutting-edge topics, including foundational research as well as research embedded in real-world testing programs. Selected fellows work on research projects and conduct independent research that is relevant to ETS's goals under the mentorship of research scientists or psychometricians in Princeton, N.J. Candidates must have received their doctorate within the past three years. This year, we are seeking applications in the following areas of expertise: measurement, psychometrics and statistics; process data modeling and analysis; and artificial intelligence.

Program guidelines

Summer Internship Program in Research for Graduate Students

This program focuses on major research activities that will occur in 2019. Selected interns conduct research under the guidance of mentors at ETS offices in Princeton, N.J. Graduate students who are currently enrolled in full-time doctoral programs in the areas listed above and who have completed a minimum of two years of coursework toward their Ph.D. or Ed.D. prior to the program start date are eligible to apply.

Title VI International Research and Studies (IRS) Program

The International and Foreign Language Education Office (IFLE) of the U.S. Department of Education is pleased to announce the opening of the competition for FY 2020 new awards under the Title VI International Research and Studies (IRS) Program. The IRS program provides grants to institutions, public and private agencies, organizations, and individuals to conduct research and studies or to develop instruction materials to improve and strengthen instruction in modern foreign languages, area studies, and other international fields. IRS program funds may not be used for the training of students and teachers. Woodrow Wilson Dissertation Fellowship in Women’s Studies

The Woodrow Wilson Dissertation Fellowship in Women’s Studies encourages original and significant research about women that crosses disciplinary, regional, or cultural boundaries. Previous Fellows have explored such topics as transnational religious education for Muslim women, the complex gender dynamics of transidentity management, women’s electoral success across racial and institutional contexts, women’s sports, militarism and the education of American women, and the relationship between family commitments and women’s work mobility. The WW Women’s Studies Fellowships support the final year of dissertation writing for Ph.D. candidates in the humanities and social sciences whose work addresses topics of women and gender in interdisciplinary and original ways.
