The Mellon Fellowship community -- fellows, liaisons, mentors and others -- gathered for the annual spring reception to recogize the achievements of the current fellows, to greet the fellows for 2009-10, and to mark another year in the growth and evolution of the fellowship.
Each current fellow spoke briefly about what the fellowship year has meant. The fellows stressed the inspiration they draw from teaching their students and the supportive relationships with their on-campus their mentors. It was gratifying to note that several fellows have completed their dissertations, and that a number are moving on to their first academic positions in the fall. All of them have made excellent progress.
The new fellows were introduced and had a chance to meet with liaisons from the campuses they will join this coming fall.
This year, it was a special pleasure to welcome Dr. Lydia English from the Mellon Foundation.
"Listening to our fellows, and seeing everyone here," said Dean Lisa Tedesco, "reminds us how many people and institutions this program continues to touch, and what a broad collaboration it represents. Together, we make progress on important goals ranging from the preparation of future faculty in crucial liberal arts fields, to providing our undergraduate students with vital learning experiences and models of intellectual and scholarly engagement, to promoting excellence and professional preparation among our graduate students – and much more."
