LGS-EDGE (LGS-Emory Diversifying Graduate Education) will host its 5th Annual Learning about Laney: Preview Visitation of Emory University, Laney Graduate School on Monday, October 2, 2023. LGS invites promising, highly qualified, prospective LGS scholars from diverse backgrounds and experiences to explore 40+ LGS degree programs offered at Emory University. 

This fully-funded visit is designed to familiarize potential LGS scholars with our graduate programs, faculty, staff, and current scholars while providing insight into the life of an LGS scholar. All participants will receive round-trip travel to Emory, lodging, and an application fee waiver for the Laney Graduate School. 

Participants will arrive in Atlanta, GA on Sunday, October 1, 2023, and the visit will convene with an evening welcome activity. Monday, October 2, 2023, will be a full-day in-person campus visit. Participants will depart on Tuesday, October 3, 2023.

  • Tour the campus and see the interdisciplinary resources and facilities.
  • Learn more about the graduate school admissions process.
  • Participate in Diversity, Financial Resources, and Professional Development Sessions.

Application Deadline

1A. Demonstrate a serious commitment to obtaining a doctoral degree from a Laney Graduate School PhD program. Interest could be in any of our PhD programs within the following broad divisions: natural sciences, biomedical sciences, quantitative sciences, public health, social sciences, humanities, business, or nursing. 

OR 

1B. Demonstrate a serious interest in applying to one of the following Masters’ programs: Bioethics, Biomedical Innovation & Development, Computer Sciences and Informatics, Development Practice, Environmental Sciences, Mathematics and Quantitative Theory & Methods.  

  • All applicants must graduate no later than Summer 2024 and anticipate enrollment in graduate school in Fall 2024.
  • Applicants must be US citizens, permanent residents, or DACA recipients. Undocumented scholars are welcomed to apply. 
  • Prior research/training experience in one’s desired field is required. 
  • Cumulative GPA of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale.

Scholars who are from groups historically underrepresented in graduate education based on race, ethnicity, and gender/gender expression such as African American or Black, American Indian, 1st Nation, Indigenous or Alaskan Native, Hispanic or Latinx, Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander, OR Women in STEAM are strongly encouraged to apply. Additionally, participants in an NIH-RISE, NIH-IMSD, Mellon Mays, McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program, OR who are first-generation college scholars who participated in Upward Bound, Talent Search, Educational Opportunities Centers or similar programs, along with scholars from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs), and Tribal Colleges and Universities are also strongly encouraged to apply. All applicants who fulfill eligibilities 1-6 listed above are welcome to apply.  

The strongest applications for this visitation program will have a clear sense of how and why each specific program is a good fit for their intended work. Learning about Laney is intended to help you gain a clearer picture of this; but as you prepare your application, we suggest looking carefully at our degree programs and faculty and indicating which you are most interested in. To that end, the application limits you to pick ONE PhD program of interest. 

Interdisciplinary work is encouraged at Emory University, but determining which academic program offers the primary methodological and research foci that best suits your interests will strengthen your application. In addition, it will allow LGS-EDGE to match you with the appropriate faculty and current scholars during your visit. What to Include in Your Application 

  • A statement describing your current academic/professional goals as they relate to your interest in graduate study. This statement should specifically mention the programs of study at Emory in which you are interested, as well as faculty members whose work is of particular interest to you. (Max 500 words) 
  • A current CV/Resume 
  • An unofficial copy of your most recent transcript
