History

The History Department offers a selective, mid-sized PhD program that provides rigorous training within a supportive and collegial academic community—a setting in which students are given opportunity work with leading scholars and encouraged to learn from one another.  We do not try to cover the entire waterfront of historical studies but encourage graduate study in particular areas:

  • Medieval European History
  • Early Modern European History
  • Modern European History
  • Colonial Latin American History and Modern Latin American History
  • African History
  • Asian History
  • American History

We share faculty and cross-list courses with Medieval Studies, Latin American and Caribbean Studies, the Institute of African Studies, Candler School of Theology, the Graduate Institute of Liberal Arts, African-American Studies, Art History, the Institute of Jewish Studies, the Law School, Middle Eastern and South Asian Studies, and Women’s Studies.
